Southport Olympic Swimming Club caters for all levels and abilities. Athletes have a clear pathway of progression through the squad structure; From an introduction into squad training right through to high performance, athletes can progress at their own pace while feeling motivated to achieve a standard to progress to the next level.

Squads & Pathways

Mini Squad

Mini squad provides an introduction into the squad program with a focus on developing the correct technique and exposure to racing. Training is up to four sessions per week.

Junior Squad

Focus is on improving technique and skills in all strokes. Junior squad athletes are actively participating in racing at local swim meets. Training is up to six sessions per week.

State Squad

Swimmers are achieving state qualifying times and aiming to qualify for age nationals. Training is 6-8 sessions per week.

National Squad

National squad athletes are targeting age national finals and medals. Training up to nine sessions per week.

High Performance

Athletes in the high performance squad are targeting open and international competition. The target for these athletes is making the Australian team. Training is nine sessions per week.

Sean Eels

National Squad Coach, Southport Assistant Coach
Sean Eels (email: has been coaching for 10 years. Before coaching at SOSC he was the inaugural Head Coach of Rackley Family Swim Schools, helping to develop their LTS & Squad programs. Sean began coaching at SOSC in 2008 as the State Squad Coach before taking over the National Age Squad program from current head Coach Glenn Baker in 2012. During this time Sean has coached swimmers to State & National Age medals in all strokes & distances from 50m to 800m. Coaching swimmers to compete at both National Age & Open Championships. He has placed swimmers on QLD State teams & Australian Junior Teams. He has also served as a team coach on GCRSA, QLD Teams & Australian Event camps. His National Squad has been ranked within the Top 10 Clubs each year on the National Age point score. Sean was the recipient of the 2011-13 Australian Sports Commission Scholarship for High Performance Sports Coaching. This scholarship allowed him to engage in seminars on topics pertinent to High performance sport at the AIS & saw him mentored by some of Australia’s leading coaches in a variety of disciplines. He is an ASCTA accredited SILVER license Swim Coach & qualified personal trainer. In addition to his coaching he is also the joint supervisor of the Learn to swim program that operates out of the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

Erin McCarthy

State Squad Coach
Erin began coaching at the age of 16 and before too long had secured an informal coaching apprenticeship with her former level 4 squad coach. Erin coached junior swimmers in England before returning to Australia to take up a post at the Helensvale Swim Club. This role allowed her to develop the junior program as she coached swimmers from non-competitive through to state and National competition. From Helensvale, Erin moved to St Hilda’s school and worked with the in-school learn to swim program, junior and senior school swim teams, and the swimming club. During her time at St Hilda’s she completed a Bachelor of Exercise Science. In 2015 Erin was appointed the State Squad coach at Southport Olympic and now coaches swimmers to State and National Level competition.

Gregor Tait

Junior Squad Coach
Gregor is a 2 x Olympian for Great Britain and 2 x Commonwealth Gold Medalist for Scotland in swimming. He competed on the World stage between 1998 and 2008 in Backstroke and Individual Medley and held both British and Scottish records across all backstroke disciplines plus 200 IM. Gregor started coaching in 2015 with Southport and has taken on the Junior squad while also helping with levels 5 & 6 learn to swim . Gregor is thankful for the guidance he’s received from all coaches at every level which has helped his development. He strives for constant improvement and looks to help with the continuation of growth within the club at all levels.

Afternoon Sessions


Training fees are payable monthly via Direct Debit to the Centre. When assessed by a member of the coaching staff you will receive Direct Debit & membership forms. These need to be completed & returned to reception prior to you commencing Squad training.
